Folded bike
If you want to save time, instead of waitng for bus and if you want to feel healthy without extra time and fee for gym, this is the best way.
The brands
Brompton is considered the best, but also the most expensive. If you just start with your folded bike career, it might be not the good idea to start directly with this. The cheapest version is about 1200 euro. Dahon is an American brand. Its design is amazing, mid-segment. 500 euro and you have good bike. Tern is a split company of Dahon (Love can bring a lot, this company is founded by wife and son of the Dahon owner). Tern has quite comparable bike as Tern. Birdy, is I think German brand. Quite expnesive like Brompton, but it has nice design and it looks durable. Sure, you can also have cheaper folded bike such as from Decatholon stores or Aldi supermarket.
What to look at
- Weight for sure. 12.5 kg is the median. 10 kg is great but mostly they are so expensive. Above 15 kg? too heavy, you will get spine problem.
- Wheel size. I think 20 inch the best one to bike on. Brompton all has 16 inch, but I tried both for a while, 20 inch gave better bike feeling.
- The easiness to fold it.
- Durability.
Brompton is like a tank, also Birdy. They are Apple I products compared to Dahon that looks like Samsung phones in the past (plastic). But, I think Dahon can survive quite long too.
My pick
Dahon Mu D8. For 16 kms a day and one train trip.
After 6 months
It is still doing well. Yet I need to mention that some parts such as plastic seat and brake start to deteriorate what perhaps not going to happen with Brompton. However, for 10 kms a day daily, you can expect it.
